Crazy Horse Memorial, South Dakota

We drove right in front of the Crazy Horse Memorial on our way to our campground, so we decided to visit that first after we were checked-in to our campsite.

Crazy Horse sculpture

(for scale, spot the three pieces of heavy machinery on the shelf right below the pointing hand)

They charge an admission fee, but that is fine, since they pride themselves for having used no public funds for the construction of the memorial, which is still ongoing.

The sculpture itself is just a small part of the experience, as they have a very comprehensive museum.  As their mission statement declares,  “Crazy Horse Memorial® honors all Indigenous people of North America, stands as a reminder of the importance of reconciliation, respecting differences, embracing diversity, striving for unity, and appreciating life’s deeper meaning as it has always been represented in Native American cultural values”.

Here is what the finished work is intended to look like (completion date TBD)
