When planning a trip, particularly one with reservations made in advance, I include what I label as “buffer days”. I try to have one of those per week of travel. Today was one of those, and we chose to go and do additional hikes in Cuyahoga N.P. We started off with the Beaver Marsh,… Continue reading Cuyahoga National Park, day 2

Cuyahoga National Park, OH
Today, we visit our first National Park during this trip. This one is very different from other National Parks we have visited, because it is set in an urban environment. It feels weird to be driving through residential neighborhoods to go from one trailhead to another. We started off at the visitor center, where we… Continue reading Cuyahoga National Park, OH
Three Rivers Petroglyph site
The Three Rivers Petroglyph site is a short drive from Alamogordo. According to the visitor center, there are over 20,000 individual petroglyphs in the area. We saw several hundred on the half-mile trail we took. It was an amazing experience. (FYI, these are not painted petroglyphs – there are engraved by removing a naturally occurring… Continue reading Three Rivers Petroglyph site
White Sands National Park
Today we spent the day at White Sands National Park, including walking 4 different trails and walking a total of almost 6 miles. If that wasn’t enough, we also did some sledding down the sand dunes. Interestingly, we only saw young kids doing that, with their parents supervising. I guess we are kids at heart…… Continue reading White Sands National Park
Hiking in the Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument
Today we hiked the “Dripping Springs Natural Area” trail. The trailhead was a convenient 30-minute drive from our campsite. The trail itself was 1 ½ miles in length, 3 miles return. The pleasant surprise with it is that some sections were still snow covered from this past weekend’s storm. The views were spectacular, and at… Continue reading Hiking in the Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument
Guadalupe Mountains NP
A fun fact about Guadalupe mountains is that it’s the same mountain chain as Carlsbad Caverns. Guadalupe is in Texas, whereas Carlsbad is in New Mexico. The mountain itself is very rugged, so there is not really a scenic drive inside the park, it’s around it. Therefore, the number of easy trails is somewhat limited. … Continue reading Guadalupe Mountains NP
Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Texas
Palo Duro Canyon was a wonderful day trip a short distance from Amarillo, TX. We spent most of the day there, most of the time was driving around the park’s loop road and stopping to take pictures, but we did include one stop for a picnic lunch, and one for a 1.5 mile hike on… Continue reading Palo Duro Canyon State Park, Texas
