Today marks the end of our first two weeks in our RV. We are now ready to move to our next destination-Manassas Bull Run Park.
Our first campground was at Greenville Farm Campground. It’s in Haymarket, VA. It’s a cute place to go, especially if you have a tent. This place is more geared towards tent camping than RVs, but we still enjoyed the peace and quiet of the place.
The sad thing about this was that we didn’t get to enjoy it as much as we first thought. We spent every day driving back to our house to work on the renovations.
Now, our challenge today was to move our RV from Haymarket to Bull Run. Normally, I wouldn’t even talk about this, but this time it very different. We’re loaded up our RV with all of our belongings, well at least what we need for the next six to eight months. That means all my papers and books for my business, everything Bernard needs for his work, the computers that we use for our household budget, the food I had in the house, our clothes, etc.
When you go from 3500 square foot house to a 340 sq ft RV, you have to be creative in where to put all your stuff. We are avid Costco shoppers. So just imagine what that could potentially mean when downsizing. Suffice to say, that we’ve managed to stuff our RV and still have room to walk around.
If you’ve never traveled in an RV, there are several things to take into consideration. First and foremost, is the weight issue. You cannot put a lot of excessive heavy items in the RV and not have the tires (or axles) fall apart. If you have never watched the movie from Lucille Ball called The Long Long Trailer (1953), then it’s a must see. You will understand why we must be careful of what we put in the RV.
OK, so we’ve carefully selected what we will live with and what we won’t. Mind you, we still need to sort our belongings because I’m sure we still have too much. The next thing we need to do it to make sure that everything is tied down so that it doesn’t move while on the road.
Realize that we have a 5th wheel, which means that the RV is hitched inside the bed of our pickup truck. We do not sit inside the trailer because the slide-outs are compressed inside the rig so that we can’t get in or out. Most travel trailers have a limit on how much weight we can travel with. (Bernard will share all the techie details on this soon)
Let me tell you that as I drove the half hour it took us from one place to the other (we’ll share why at a later post), I could definitely feel the weight difference. No way was I going to drive too fast.
But now, we’re here at Bull Run Campground and we love it. It’s one of our favorite places to come. We are surrounded by trees and it’s quiet. And because we got here early and didn’t need to do much in the RV, we took an hour long nap, which was desperately needed.
Now off to enjoy our free day, doing absolutely nothing (sort of).
