More Canyons… Canyonlands is really 3 parks in one due to the land masses being separated by two rivers that merge inside the park boundaries, the Green river and the Colorado River. We visited the “Island in the sky” section, which is the most developed part of the park. The Needles section consists mostly of “challenging trails” , some of which can only be reached as part of a multi-day hiking journey. The Maze section is for adventurers. The Park’s publication states”
“The maze is remote, and all roads are unpaved. You’ll need a four-wheel-drive vehicle, more time, and a greater degree of self-sufficiency to visit the Maze. Your trip may take anywhere from three days to a week or more.”
Back to Island in the sky, what is amazing is that the road is basically on an upper plateau which as canyons on both sides. And not only that, but each side has a canyon within a canyon, in that there is a very wide canyon down to a geologic layer known as the White Rim layer, and then a narrower but equally deep canyon within. So altogether, it could be described as 4 canyons in one park…
Enough words, as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words…
