Today we spent the day at White Sands National Park, including walking 4 different trails and walking a total of almost 6 miles.
If that wasn’t enough, we also did some sledding down the sand dunes. Interestingly, we only saw young kids doing that, with their parents supervising. I guess we are kids at heart…
The sand is as white as the one in Destin, which we are told is actually gypsum crystals. What was different however, is being far enough on a trail where all you see anywhere around you is white sand dunes. White Sands had been a National Monument since 1939, and became a National Park in 2019. And for us, it’s our third National Park visited during this trip.
Claudette’s Two Cents.
This is a great day. I loved walking here on beach-like sand dunes. On our last trip to Texas a few years ago, we camps at some sand dunes. They were very different from these.
First, in the White Sands National Park, you don’t sink as much as you do in the other sand dunes. The gypsum seems to compact itself and hold your weight.
Second, there is vegetation everywhere, which gives you some landmark, but not much.
Now here’s a quick video of us tobogganing down the hill (I’ll add photos soon):
And here’s Bernard coming down the hill (I did his voice over.)
And well, although it’s fun to see us acting like little kids, I did want to show you what the park looks like.
