Travel from Roswell NM to Carlsbad NM

Today was a short drive almost due south on US-285 from Roswell NM to Carlsbad NM.  The highlight from today is that our destination was the Sunset Reef Campground, which is a First Come First Serve campground.  We arrived shortly after 1PM, and were ecstatic that we could pull directly into one of the sites, complete with a covered picnic table (the campground consists of only five RV spaces and six tent sites)

Once set-up, we headed out to the Carlsbad Caverns visitor center, taking time to stop from time to time to take in the views, and finally to view the information video that the visitor center runs.  The actual visit of the caves is going to be tomorrow, and we obtained timed entry passes well in advance.  That’s a good thing since he heard a ranger at the information desk telling another customer that no entry passes were available for tomorrow, and there is no allowance for same day walk-ins.  Planning pays off!

Claudette’s Two Cents.

I’m catching up on Bernard’s posts and putting my two cents where it makes sense.

Yes, the drive from one campground to another was short. The drive from the main road to the campground was “interesting!” It was a rough road, that went through a cattle ranch.

Once we got close the our campsite, we noticed that we would be inside a cattle enclosure. That meant the cattle were outside and we’d be inside. AHAHHAA!

We’re super excited to be off grid – that means no running water (except what we put in our holding tanks,) no electricity except for our solar panels and our gas generator and our propane to cook and heat. We’ll let you know how we did.

The best thing about this was that it’s so dark, we could see the Milky Way and even heard coyotes.

Below are some photos from our day.
