Following up on the Alabama shoreline, today we visited the Mississippi coastline…
We all recall hurricane Katrina in 2005, and the news reports had mostly focused on its impact on New Orleans. But according to this article https://www.gulfcoast.org/plan/secret-facts/, “On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina brought a 28-foot storm surge to the shores of Coastal Mississippi, devastating all 12 coastal cities. In total, Katrina claimed 238 Mississippian’s lives and caused more than $241 billion dollars in damages to the state”.
Over the years, other hurricanes and storm surges damaged that area of the coastline, as evidenced by the topology of the coastline. US-90 between Biloxi and Gulfport follows the shoreline with great views of the gulf because there are hardly any structures between the roadway and the gulf.
Across the road, there are zero flimsy structures, as those have all been wiped out by earlier weather events. So a lot of the land is empty one or two lots deep, except for either older brick or concrete structures, or scattered recent structures built on stilts so that any storm surge would (hopefully) flow below the structure.

To wrap-up the beach segment of our trip, here is one additional fun fact: Coastal Mississippi has 62 miles of scenic coastline with 26 miles of beaches. So its Gulf of Mexico frontage is about the same as that of Alabama.
Claudette’s Two Cents.
I enjoyed the drive along the coast, but after being in Florida and Alabama, it’s nice, but not wow. I was very surprised by how many casinos were here. I will say that I LOVE our campground at Moss Point. The campground owner personally greeted us and helped us with the set up. I will say this was Southern Hospitality as its best.
Again, a place we’d return in a heartbeat.
