We read a lot, but I had never heard of the Newberry volcano before. That changed today. We started off at the visitor center and hiked the trail right outside it. We certainly were unaware that the Newberry volcano is the biggest volcano in the USA ( I thought it was Yellowstone). This main be because its been dormant for more than a thousand years.
We then headed out to another section of the NM, where we had lunch by Lake Paulina, and then hiked two separate trails: Paulina Falls, and Big Obsidian Flow.
Obsidian is a glass-like black rock that is created under specific volcano eruption conditions. It was a very nioce hike with useful information panels at regular intervals.
From there, we proceeded back into the town of Bend, and went to “Bend Cider” where we shared a couple of cider flights to sample their products. We left later with some take-home cans of the ones Claudette preferred.
After a nice dinner, the day ended with time spent in the campground’s hot tub.
