Pompei’s Pillar National Monument

Pompei’s Pillar is a National Monument that is owned by the Bureau of Land Management, and therefore not the National Park Service. Our stay  in Billings, MT was going to be our basecamp to go and visit it, but it turns out that it was along our route from Miles City, MT, and we were able to verify that it had bus/RV parking, so we actually stopped there with our RV in tow on our way to Billings.

Pompei’s pillar is a sandstone outcrop landmark along the Yellowstone river, who’s claim to fame is that it is along the route of the famous Lewis & Clark expedition.  And specifically the landmark has an engraving where William Clark graffitied his signature on the rock outcrop in 1806 (by today’s norms, this is considered defacing of property).  The location also features a very informative visitor center, and we spent a couple of hours there.
