Routine maintenance and emergency repairs

Part of owning a “big rig” is routine maintenance to avoid problems on the road, and one task is to regularly check tire inflation (particularly when there are significant elevation changes).

One morning, as Claudette is doing this, she noticed rapid wear on the tires, and cut steel belt sticking out from the rubber – Oh my!  So it became clear that our plan, which was to have all tires – car an RV – replaced once we got back home could not wait that long.  We had a drive of 200 miles scheduled for that day, and we were concerned that the tires might not last that long.

Our booked campground for that day was in WaKeeny, KS.  But calls were made while driving to locate a shop that did RV tire changes, and had the correct size in stock.  We located once in Hays, KS, which was 30 minutes further out on our journey.

We got there at 4PM, and within an hour, they had changed out all 5 tires (2 axles, plus the spare which also had some wear on it from a prior tire rotation)

While on the road, we had noticed that the RV was riding off-center, which was causing the tires to wear rapidly and unevenly.  While at the tire shop, the technician noticed that one of our leaf springs was broken, and this was causing the problem.  So we paid the one-night penalty to cancel our original booking, and stayed at one in Hays.  Based on the referral from the tire shop, the following morning, we replaced the broken leaf spring & had the wheel bearings greased, so we now have our RV back in roadworthy status again.
