Yesterday, we covered the top part of the park, which is where the Joshua Trees are, and most of the trails.
Today, we drove all the way to the South entrance of the park (Cottonwood visitor center), which interestingly gets into a distinct desert. The western half of the desert (yesterday) is in the Mojave Desert, whereas the eastern part (today) is in the Colorado desert (itself a subset of the much larger Sonoran Desert in which we were when we visited Arizona).
The main attractions today were:
- rock formations (Heart Rock, and Arch Rock)
- The Cholla Cactus Garden
- The Ocotillo Patch (won’t say more about that in here. We saw much better in Arizona).
While the rock formations were interesting and popular, they just happen to be happy coincidences of “rocks that look like something familiar”
The Cholla Cactus Garden by itself was stunning and well worth today’s visit on its own, particularly since some were just beginning to bloom.
