The Three Rivers Petroglyph site is a short drive from Alamogordo. According to the visitor center, there are over 20,000 individual petroglyphs in the area. We saw several hundred on the half-mile trail we took. It was an amazing experience. (FYI, these are not painted petroglyphs – there are engraved by removing a naturally occurring layer of oxidation from the surface of the rock.
On the drive back we stopped at Pistachioland – the closest to a tourist trap since we started our trip. Then almost next door to “Heart of the Desert” for a wine tasting.
Claudette’s Two Cents:
What an amazing hike. I just love seeing these petroglyphs, imagining in my head what the people we trying to share, their customs and traditions and their journey.
Also, we kept seeing this mountain (from White Sands National Park) and now here and we were wondering which mountains they were. We will soon find out.
I’m going to share pictures of rocks with pictures on them. If this is too much, I won’t be offended if you skip over this. It’s fine. I promise. You might want to go for a coffee break (or something stronger,) or maybe a pee break. Just remember, I did warn you.
(PS. The captions are only meant to add a bit of humor and make it more interesting to look at rocks. No disrespect to the Natives who left their stories for us to try and figure out.)
And since Bernard mentioned pistachios, here are a few pics on this too.
