summary of our first BLM experience

BLM stands for Bureau of Land Management and is part of the US Government.  It sets aside certain areas for public use, and no cost to the users.

Such camping involves no hookups (see previous post on dry camping).  In this case, the area was set up as a campground, and had designated areas for both RVs and tents.  Our site had a covered picnic table.  The campground also had a pit toilet (which we didn’t need or use since we have our own in our RV.

We definitely had the biggest RV in the campground, and the clientele we saw ranged from people sleeping in their cars, people with motorcycles or cars sleeping in a tent, one in a converted short school bus, and many in camping minivans (aka class B RVs). In summary, a much broader range of campers than what we normally encounter in a traditional campground.

What impressed us the most is how quiet the place was.  No one played loud music, and those who had generators had silent ones, so we barely heard them while they were running, and no one ran them after dark.

Because there are no park owners present to enforce any rules, we weren’t sure what to expect, but it certainly was not an issue, and we would definitely do this again.
