What? There’s a shore in Alabama?

Gulf State Park in Alabama is an unexpected pleasant surprise.  The area of the state park dedicated to camping is huge, and each of the 496 sites is quite large, with the pads varying between 45 and 65 feet in length.  It is also a full hookup campground, which isn’t always the case in state parks.

Now for a few fun facts about Alabama’s shoreline.  When one looks at a US map, Alabama is mostly north of the panhandle section of Florida.  However, a small section of the state is actually on the Gulf of Mexico in the southwest corner of the state. Just a blip on the map really, sandwiched in between Florida and Mississippi. A bit of research reveals that “Alabama has approximately 50 miles of Gulf Beach and an estimated 65 to 70 miles of bay beaches”.  But perhaps the most interesting is that it reportedly has over 600 miles of tidal and estuarine shoreline, most of it being around Mobile bay

Claudette’s Two Cents:

As Bernard titled this post, we kept saying “WHAT? This is here? It’s so beautiful. We’re already talking about how to arrange to come back next year. HAHA!
Here are a few extra pictures I took, just so I remember how beautiful it is.

This is one of the views from the campground. Not too many high-rise as you can see.
We’re already scouting our site for our next visit.
As a painter, I love to look at nature for inspiration. These trees are beautiful.
See how deep the beach is? And the sand. It’s WHITE!

Just in case you didn’t get the gist how how deep the beach is, here’s another photo, with Bernard as a reference point.
UMMMM! I might just change my mind about swimming here.
