On our way from Baton Rouge to New Orleans, we drove south on I-55 and were surprised to drive such a long distance on an elevated roadway built like a long bridge. Later research revealed that the section named the Manchac Swamp Bridge, is a nearly 23-mile elevated roadway above the swampy terrain and is often cited as the third-longest viaduct in the world. The drive was surprising because along the highway, many structures could be seen that looked more like shacks than homes, and many had blue tarps on the roof, even though the passage of hurricane Katrina dates back to 2005!
